I am a certified, licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). I began my career by working as an SLP in public school settings with a mix of hearing, Deaf, and hard-of-hearing children. Next, I worked as a Clinical Supervisor at Northwestern University, training graduate students in the SLP program. Since then, my work experience has included supervising SLP Assistants, serving as a consultant and diagnostician for a school district, and teaching at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Once a semester I present a guest lecture at the University of Colorado about the insights I have gained through viewing the field from the perspective of an SLP who is also the parent of kids in SLP services.
My journey into this field started when I was a journalist working on a magazine and met a designer who was Deaf. He signed beautifully but could not speak. He said he would have loved to have had both options, but speech therapy for him as a child had been so dull and had felt so irrelevant to his life, he resisted going and eventually quit. As I heard similar stories from his friends and others, I became interested in the field. It was my dream to make speech therapy fun, functional, individualized, and effective.
After many years of working in the field, I decided to go back to school to get a PhD with the hope of figuring out ways to bridge the gap I kept seeing between research and clinical work. As I was writing my dissertation, I had two sons who both turned out to need SLP services. My journey with them has given me the perspective of a parent, child, and family dealing with speech issues.
